The Delawares

The Ohio segment of the Delaware Tribe was doing most of the damage to the Western frontier of Pennsylvania.  They were located at the village of Kittanning on the east bank of the Allegheny River.

The two leaders of that group were Shingas and Captain Jacob.

References are fairly equally divided in the question of which of these two lead the band that attacked McCord's Fort on April 1, 1756.

Lowry only refers to one Indian by name throughout her journal.  She refers to one called Captain when she describes his firing a shot at her when she was reluctant to cross a large creek while carrying her two year old daughter.  However, this was after the two bands had reunited at Sideling Hill, so this doesn't help.

Sipe's "The Indian Chiefs of Pennsylvania" contains a biography of both Chiefs.  The Shingas bio credits him with attacking McCord's Fort, so that will be the assumption until something more decisive is found. (18)

It was widely reported that Captain Jacob was killed and scalped at the Battle of Sideling Hill.  The Indian member of Ensign Jameson's company brought back the scalp and was ultimately awarded a bounty for this.  However, it was not long before Captain Jacob was again noted raiding the white settlements.

He was ultimately killed during Armstrong's raid on Kittanning on September 8th, 1756.  Armstrong and his men destroyed the village by fire and scattered the inhabitants, after which the Delawares retreated across the Allegheny to settlements closer to Fort Duquesne.
